Tom Abdenour is the current head athletic trainer for San Diego State University. He is a graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan, where he received a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in science education in 1978. He is married to his wife Christine, and have three children, Rebecca, Carolyn, and Thomas. His Brother Mike is the athletic trainer for the Detroit Pistons. Tom began his career in 1978 at Hillsdale College in Michigan as the head athletic trainer for one year. He then went on to spend eight years as the athletic trainer for Weber State in Utah where he oversaw all fifteen varsity sports. In 1987, he joined the Golden State and became their head athletic trainer, working for the club for 24 years. In 2011, he left the Warriors for a head athletic trainer position at San Diego State University where he currently works.

 

 

 

 

  • Inducted into the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame on July 17, 2007

  • Certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association.

  • Recipient of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association’s Tim Kerin Award for Excellence in Athletic Training in 2005.

  • In 1990 he was elected as the NBA’s Athletic Trainer of the Year.

  • Was the athletic trainer for the 2000 USA Men’s Senior Basketball Team in the Sydney

  • Olympics, 1999 Goodwill Games in New York, and the 1994 U.S. World Championships in Toronto.

  • Tom and his brother Mike were the first brother athletic training combination in professional sports.
