Mike Bungarz was a baseball pitcher for Moreau Catholic High School 1972-1975. The Moreau baseball team was a force to be reckoned with throughout the 1970’s and Bungarz was a big factor to the team’s success. In 1972 he played on the Frosh League Championship team, and in 73’ his JV team would go on to be league champions, and in 74’ and 75’ the varsity teams he played for took the championships as well. Throughout his career Bungarz was a feared pitcher, and was named all league for two consecutive years, and set a legacy for pitching at Moreau Catholic. One of his most notable career moments was the 1974 Moreau baseball team going undefeated in league (14-0) and moving on to the championship game of the “Tournament of Champions.” Bungarz was one of the top athletes on the baseball team, and was inducted in the Moreau Catholic Hall of Fame in 2008 by Don Morneau. He went on to continue his pitching career at Chabot College, and Cal State Hayward earning All Conference honors at both schools, and was inducted in the Chabot Athletic Hall of Fame. Out of college, Bungarz was drafted and signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1979, and then went on to play for the San Francisco Giants until 1981. After his baseball career Bungarz to spread his expertise of baseball as a coach. He coached baseball at Tennyson High School in (1982), Mission San Jose (1983-5), Moreau catholic (1991-2002), and San Leandro (2012-present). He received conference coach of the years honors in 1982, 1996, 2001, and 2013. Bungarz notes that he was blessed to have great coaches at Moreau where he was taught how to win “the right way.” Today he still continues his career as a coach and mentor of the game of baseball.
