Lindsy Mclean attended Vanderbilt and began his athletic training there as a student athletic trainer. He was the head athletic trainer and director of physical therapy at the University of California, Santa Barbara from 1963 to 1965.Then he became the  head of athletic trainers for the 49ers from 1979 to 2003. Mclean was gay and most of the 49ers and reporters for the team knew. But other places were very homophobic. So Mclean kept his life with his partner separate from his life with the 5 time Super Bowl champions. In 2003, he finally retired from his position as athletic trainer for the 49ers and in 2004 he came out as openly gay.
