John Ayers was a National Football League offensive lineman from 1977 through 1987. Ayers played college football at West Texas A&M University and was drafted in the 8th round of the 1976 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers. In his time the 49ers, he appeared in and won two Super Bowls: Super Bowl XVI in 1982 and Super Bowl XIX in 1985.  Ayers was also an important part of the final 89-yard drive against the Dallas Cowboys during the 1982 NFC Playoffs that ended in the famous play known as "The Catch". He was also a member of the 1987 Denver Broncos team that lost Super Bowl XXII. Ayers also served for a short time as the President of Bill Watts' Universal Wrestling Federation. Ayers was diagnosed with liver cancer and died on October 2, 1995.
