Doug Henry grew up in Hayward, CA and attended Tennyson High School. He participated in multiple sports including baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, and bowling. He received an All-City selection in both baseball and basketball in 1982. He was also named Northern California Baseball Player of the year. He was then drafted in the 12th round by the New York Mets, but declined and went on to attend Arizona State University. At ASU, he pitched very well, earning a selection to the Baseball America’s freshman All-American Team, and threw a one-hitter in the College World Series. In 1985, he was drafted to the Milwaukee Brewers in the eighth round, and spent 5 and a half years in the minors. He was then called up to the majors in 1991, and earned Rookie of the Year honors with a record of 2-1, a 1.00 ERA, and set a franchise record with 15 consecutive saves.
